A practical alternative to welded steel pipe-in-pipe

DoubleTrac creates long, flexible fuel routes with fewer site-made connections. Its mechanical fittings assemble without welding, so no hot works are required to join the DoubleTrac pipe and fittings.

Installation is faster and cleaner, complex routes are easier to negotiate, and the continuous interstitial space provides the foundation for permanent leak monitoring.

How the system is built

One flexible fuel pipe with built-in secondary containment

A corrugated 316L stainless-steel primary pipe carries the fuel. A continuous interstitial space enables leak monitoring, while an EFEP secondary barrier and UV-stabilised Nylon 12 jacket provide secondary containment and robust external protection.

No welding or hot works

Mechanical fittings create a secure metal-to-metal fuel connection using standard installation tools—without welding the pipework.

Flexible routing

The flexible pipe follows changes in direction, reduces the need for elbows and makes constrained or complex routes easier to install.

Monitorable containment

The continuous interstitial space connects to pressure, vacuum or sensor-based leak detection for permanent system monitoring.

Applications across fuel-handling industries

More than generator and marina pipework

DoubleTrac provides one versatile pipework platform for pressure and suction fuel supply, return lines, tank filling, vent pipework, recirculation and vapour-recovery routes across a wide range of fuel-handling industries.

Commercial, fleet and forecourt refuelling

  • Pressure or suction supply from fuel storage to dispensing equipment.
  • Above-ground and underground sections of refuelling systems.
  • Tank-fill, vent and vapour-recovery routes within the listed applications.
  • Private fleet, bus, distribution, plant, quarry, emergency-service and government depots.

Listed to UL 1369 for above-ground use and UL 971A for underground use, DoubleTrac enables one continuous pipe family to transition between buried and exposed sections of a route.

Heating-oil and building fuel services

  • Fuel-oil supply from storage to building heating plant.
  • Remote fill and vent routes.
  • Constrained internal, external and buried routes around established buildings.

A strong choice for schools, prisons, MOD facilities, estates, larger private properties and other off-grid buildings that need dependable, secondary-contained heating-oil pipework.

Aviation and airport fuel infrastructure

  • Fixed aviation-fuel transfer and dispensing infrastructure.
  • Airport and airfield refuelling facilities.
  • Fuel routes serving engine-test and maintenance facilities.

The DoubleTrac listing includes aviation fuels, bringing flexible routing, secondary containment and independently evaluated system performance to airport and airfield infrastructure.

Fuel terminals, bulk storage and industrial transfer

  • Transfer routes associated with above-ground or underground bulk petroleum storage.
  • Tank fill, distribution, recirculation and selected process-use routes.
  • Industrial sites where secondary containment and monitored pipework reduce environmental risk.

Flexible routing and monitorable secondary containment make DoubleTrac a practical solution for complex transfer routes where environmental protection and operational reliability are priorities.

Rail refuelling infrastructure

  • Fixed storage-to-dispensing pipework at rail depots and maintenance facilities.
  • Fill, transfer and recirculation routes using an approved fuel.
  • Above-ground, exposed or difficult routes where flexible double containment is beneficial.

DoubleTrac brings fast installation, fewer joints and monitored double containment to fixed rail-depot fuel infrastructure and difficult storage-to-dispensing routes.

One pipe family above and below ground

DoubleTrac combines a UL 1369 above-ground listing with a UL 971A underground listing. That gives designers and installers one flexible, secondary-contained pipe family for routes that move between buried sections, plant rooms, risers, rooftops and dispensing equipment.

Evidence for designers, specifiers and asset owners

UL 1369 tests the pipe-and-fitting system—not just the material

ANSI/CAN/UL/ULC 1369 is the dedicated product-safety standard for factory-manufactured above-ground piping used to transfer flammable and combustible liquids. It evaluates the complete pipe-and-fitting system across pressure integrity, secondary containment, mechanical strength, environmental exposure, fuel compatibility and fire performance.

This system-level approach goes far beyond specifying a material such as stainless steel. It demonstrates how the assembled DoubleTrac system performs under the real mechanical, environmental and fire challenges encountered by above-ground fuel pipework.

Why should UK and European projects care about a North American standard?

UL 1369 provides one of the most comprehensive independent assessment frameworks available for above-ground fuel pipework. It tests the complete manufactured system—not simply the pipe material—across the performance areas that matter most on a fuel installation.

UK and European standards cover important parts of the picture: BS EN 13480 addresses metallic industrial piping design and construction, while EN 14125 covers underground fuel pipework at filling stations. There is no directly equivalent BS or EN product standard that brings together the same breadth of pressure, functional, physical-abuse, environmental, fuel-compatibility and fire testing for a factory-manufactured above-ground fuel pipe-and-fitting system.

For UK and Irish projects, the UL 1369 listing gives specifiers, insurers and asset owners a powerful independent evidence base for selecting DoubleTrac over systems supported only by a material specification or general fabrication code.

What does UL 1369 evaluate—and why does each test matter?

UL 1369 subjects the complete pipe-and-fitting system to a broad programme of performance tests. Each group answers a practical question about how the system will perform throughout installation and service.

UL 1369 evaluation Tests included Why it matters on a fuel installation
Pressure integrity Leakage test; hydrostatic test; breakdown test. Confirms that the assembled pipe and fittings retain fuel at rated duty, withstand proof pressure and provide strength beyond normal operating conditions.
Secondary-containment function Interstitial communication test; design-pressure tests; design-vacuum tests. Confirms that the interstitial space communicates with the leak-detection system and withstands the pressure or vacuum used for continuous monitoring.
Handling and installation abuse Drop test; impact test; puncture test; fitting-torque test; pipe-torque test. Demonstrates resilience against the knocks, tool loads and handling stresses encountered during transport, installation and service.
Mechanical loading and routing Tension test; compression test; bending test; support-bracket test. Demonstrates the strength to withstand pulling, compression, bending and support loads across demanding pipework routes.
Special-use environments Corrosion-resistance tests; tide-cycle test. Proves performance in demanding external environments and through repeated marina movement for systems carrying the relevant special-use rating.
Short-term environmental and material compatibility UV-exposure test; metallic stress-crack test; nonmetallic stress-crack test. Demonstrates that sunlight and environmental exposure do not undermine the metallic and polymer elements that protect the fuel system.
Long-term fluid compatibility Long-term compatibility testing using the liquids and fuel categories for which the product is investigated. Tests the effect of prolonged contact with listed fuels and liquids, providing evidence that system performance is maintained over time.
Fire performance Fire test followed by the applicable integrity assessment. Demonstrates how the complete listed assembly performs under fire exposure—critical evidence where fuel pipework passes through buildings or supports essential equipment.
Manufacturing consistency Manufacturing and production tests, together with controlled markings and installation instructions. Connects the tested design to ongoing production through controlled marking, manufacturing tests and UL Follow-Up Service.
Marine Use

Traceable

Independent listing evidence

Independent certification under OmegaFlex file MH45578 gives project teams clear, traceable evidence backed by UL’s ongoing Follow-Up Service.

The result: a deeper and more complete evidence base for above-ground fuel pipework—covering the areas that matter to designers, insurers, contractors and asset owners.

Installation and monitoring

Secondary containment is most valuable when it is actively monitored

DoubleTrac provides a continuous interstitial route between the primary fuel pipe and secondary barrier, enabling permanent pressure, vacuum or sensor-based leak monitoring across the pipework system.

Combined with clearly zoned alarms, the system can identify a loss of containment before fuel reaches the environment—strengthening environmental protection and giving operators faster, more precise fault information.

Basement-to-rooftop generator fuel supply in Dublin

The published PFS case study follows a demanding generator fuel route from basement bulk storage, through internal service areas and up to a rooftop day tank.

Around 10 days

Programme saving

The contractor reported a substantially faster installation than its welded-steel comparison.

PFS supplied the pipe in continuous coiled lengths with mechanical BSPT end fittings for assembly on site. Following fitting-assembly training, the installer pulled the flexible pipe through service ducts and supported it on the planned trays and brackets—without welding the DoubleTrac joints or bringing hot works to the route.
